Student Work

Hi, I am Craig C. Harrison.  I am a Title I teacher working in the Computer Lab.  This lab is a drill and practice lab utilizing Orchard Teacher's Choice Software, from Siboney Learning Group.  I am in my seventh year teaching.  My first year was teaching sixth grade in a middle school.  I transferred to Key Elementary School as the Computer Lab teacher.  I have a very extensive knowledge of computers.  Key Elementary was originally a school that had only Apple computers.  We have since started a change over to IBM compatible computers.

At the end of last school year we were told we were going to get a brand new computer lab.  The computers in the lab would have to be moved out by the end of the school year.  This was done and over the summer 29 brand new PC's, with a black laser printer and a color inkjet printer and a scanner were put in the lab.  This past year the school was also wired for the network.  The teachers were grateful to get more computers in the classroom.

All 1st through 5th grade classes use the lab.

We have several hard of hearing students and one class of special education students who also use the lab.  These students have made significant progress in the lab.

The lab is used to help reinforce objectives taught in the classroom.  The classroom teachers work close with me in helping to determine what the students should be working on.  Reports are given to the teachers every two weeks to help them keep up to date on the students progress in the lab.  Parent reports are printed every six weeks and sent home with report cards to inform the parents of their child's progress.

In 1999-2000 school year I started using most of the programs within Success Maker from CCC.  The programs used are different math, reading, and language arts programs that are  for different  grade levels and give a variety of ways to learn different aspects of these areas.

During the 1999-2000 school year scan converters were purchased.  During the current year a printer was purchased to be able to print from all computers.  The lab can also be considered a Production Lab.

In 2001-2002 school year we purchased Orchard Teacher's Choice Software.  The students seem to like it better then Success Maker.

We have also started other programs in the Computer Lab.  To view these programs click here.

Additional Instruction

With the emphasizes on technology I started monthly class for all 1st – 5th grade students to identify the different parts of the computers and related systems.  I took pictures of each of these items and placed them in a Power Point presentation.  The students are not allowed to take notes. Each month we do a review of what was learned the previous months before learning new material.

1999-2000 school year we had the Internet brought into the Lab.  It was only on 11 computers.  This year we received a proxy server and now have the Internet on 25 computers.  The other six computers are not capable of having the Internet.

Also in the lab the 3rd – 5th grade take the Star Reading and Star Math placement tests.  These tests are taken three times a year once at the beginning, then at the semester and finally at the end of the year.

Extra Curricular Activities

This year I developed a project called Planning My Vacation that requires the students to research different National Parks on the Internet.  They are required to determine mileage and other items to determine the total cost of a vacation.  This project ends with the students doing a KidPix slide show.

During my first year at Key, I started a Broadcast team.  This team is responsible for beginning the school day with the pledge, moment of silence, lunch menu, and announcements for both teachers and students.  Since the first year we have added On This Day in History, Positive Action Words, Word of the Week, and questions for students to think about during the moment of silence.  This year we are only using Word of the Week and the question for the moment of silence along with the original items.
